Schofields Flying Club is a highly professional flight training organisation operating from Sydney's Bankstown Airport. We cater for the training needs of operators seeking cost effective programmes for induction of new aircrew. We cater for the training needs of individuals who aspire to a commercial aviation career in its many different facets and we cater for the training and advancement of private pilots seeking the enjoyment of aviation as a recreation or as a business tool. Schofields Flying Club provides all flight and ground training components associated with private and commercial pilot training.

Gateway to Aviation for Commercial, Recreational or Business Purposes

The scope of training offered by the Club can provide students with a full range of credentials from Day VFR Private Pilot all the way to Commercial Pilot Licence with Multiengine Command Instrument Ratings, and assistance to Air Transport Pilot Licences.

Landing on RWY 11C at YSBK Schofields Flying Club is the largest flying club in the greater Sydney Region and provides a wider social facility for both private pilots and career oriented pilots, adding a variety of competitive events, flyaways, and broader exposure to the world of aviation which we are proud to promote. Club members include professional aviators, recreational pilots and many others associated with providing the services on which our aviation industry relies and all Club members can enjoy the camaraderie of fellow aviators.

For the Commercial Pilot, the world of aviation is exciting, dynamic, and demanding. The professional aviators of tomorrow need the thorough career preparation which Schofields Flying Club provides.

For the Private Pilot, aviation as a recreation provides a unique sense of freedom, fun and accomplishment which will stay with you forever. As a business tool you will find the flexibility and economy of general aviation to be a real asset.

Schofields Flying Club will provide you with the aviation fulfilment you are looking for, and be there with you to satisfy your interests and develop new skills in the exciting world of aviation.

A Profile of our Organisation and its Capabilities - A Proud History of Aviation Professionalism
Top of Page
1983 Schofields Airshow Schofields Flying Club is the largest flying club in the greater Sydney Region. The Club has had a proud history of flying operations for over 30 years, with training as one its core propositions. Students have come from all walks of life and at all stages in their careers, but all have shared the common passion for aviation. A large number have moved on to professional aviation careers, others have chosen the challenge of aviation as a recreation. All carry with them the enthusiasm for professionalism coupled with fun that so exemplifies the modern aviator.

Schofields Flying Club has also been a major promoter of aviation in Australia. It organised the first major Air Show in Sydney during 1976 at the Schofields naval airstrip, followed by more Air Shows in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1983 and 1985. 1988 was a key year for the Club when it was commissioned by the Australian Bicentennial Authority to organise and stage one of five major events for the year - the outstandingly successful Australian Bicentennial Air Show at RAAF Richmond air base (the other four were Expo '88, Tall Ships, Naval Review and Army Tattoo).

Schofields Flying Club builds on the values underlying this tradition of aviation professionalism and industry enthusiasm in preparing aviators for tomorrow.

A Comprehensive Flight Training Environment

Bankstown airport is Sydney's primary general aviation facility, located to the south west of the City of Sydney and Sydney International Airport in a suburban and light industrial location. Bankstown offers the student exposure to a busy airfield air traffic environment which soon becomes second nature, along with access to convenient uncontrolled airspace in the Sydney basin and surrounding areas for visual training purposes.

A wide selection of navigation aids is within easy reach, as well as the adjacent Sydney primary control zone and radar environment for advanced training. The immediate proximity of a range of airspace types provides the student with the experience, confidence and capability to conduct all manner of operations without the need for lengthy and costly transit stages.

An Excellent Aircraft Fleet

College Fleet Professional training must develop a professional attitude and airmanship. Attitude evolves from the culture of the learning environment. Schofields Flying Club believes in establishing that culture by being professional in all aspects of flying. That includes the maintenance and equipment levels of aircraft provided for training. The Club operates a fleet of modern and well equipped aircraft consisting of:

  • Cessna 150/152 (several)
  • Cessna 182
  • Piper Warrior (several)
  • Beechcraft Duchess
  • Piper Archer III
  • Piper Aztec
  • Piper Arrow (several)
Basic training is undertaken in the 2 seat Cessna 150/152. Students advance through the 4 seat Piper Warrior and Piper Archer for cross-country training, and progress onto the higher performance, retractable undercarriage Piper Arrow for further cross country and instrument flight training.

Multi-engine training is undertaken on the 4 seat twin engine Beechcraft Duchess, with progression to the 6 seat Piper Aztec as widely used by charter operators.

Schofields Flying Club has a policy of maintaining its fleet with contemporary avionics. Most of our aircraft are full IFR, several with state of the art Garmin GNS 430 or King KLN 94 GPS.

Instrument Rating training is conducted in Piper Warrior, Piper Archer III, Piper Arrow or twin engine Beechcraft Duchess. For ground training, Schofields Flying Club use the latest dual Elite AT-21 Category B unit, capable of simulating instrument flight with all navigation aids, including GPS, in aircraft types up to the Beechcraft Kingair.

Highest Calibre Flight Training and Teaching Staff
Top of Page
The Club employs a number of flight instructors, many of whom are Grade 1. They provide the full range of proficiency requirements. These include:
  • GFPT
  • Private Pilot Licence
  • Commercial Pilot Licence
  • Constant Speed Propeller
  • Retractable Undercarriage
  • Multi Engine endorsements

From these instructors come a broad range of experience and knowledge. Having a flight training centre that can provide the comprehensive range of theory and practical training means that students don't get lost between major stages. Each transition is closely monitored for performance by the CFI to ensure the student has a smooth progression and attains the skills and knowledge required to be a proficient pilot. Furthermore, exposure to a number of different instructors through their training career also gives the students a greater sense of confidence in the cockpit command environment.
