Ab Initio Flying Training

C152 Aerobat So, you think you'd like to learn to fly? We'll be happy to discuss all aspects of the decision with you. Maybe you have always wanted to learn, or maybe it's something spurred on by experiences with friends in more recent times. There is quite a bit involved with the process of learning to fly, and we can make it as easy as possible for you.

Schofields Flying Club provides an outstanding mix of personal attention and service to individuals with the goal of learning to fly, and of continuing to enhance their flying qualifications and capabilities after gaining a Private Pilot Licence. We provide you with the best in flight and ground training, delivered to you in a positive and supportive environment.

Fun, Freedom and Achievement with the Professional Touch

The majority of private pilots train on single engine aircraft and choose to upgrade to more advanced single engine types once their basic training is complete. A significant number also hold qualifications on twin engine aircraft. More and more private pilots are also upgrading their qualifications with Night VFR and Private Instrument Ratings which offer an added degree of skill, safety and utility. If you would like to receive further qualifications in tail-wheel operations, aerobatics, formation flying or low level operations, we can build that into your course programme as well. Some of our private pilots get so hooked they even continue their training to gain a Commercial Pilot Licence with full Command Instrument Rating. We can help you with all of these credentials in a cost effective programme built up from the CASA curriculum. We are always mindful of budget considerations, and can advise and tailor a training programme at a pace suited to your needs.

Our fleet is geared to accommodate all training requirements, ranging from basic flying training all the way to airline standard commercial training. Our simulator facility for instrument flight training is state of the art. Our computer network provides all the essential AirServices links. CASA Cyber-Exams are available. In short, all the capabilities required for highly professional training of private pilots are delivered through Schofields Flying Club.

This, plus all the fun of flying that our associated Club environment provides - competition flying, fly-away holidays or weekend trips, and the camaraderie of fellow pilots of all levels of experience.

Of greatest importance however is the degree of professionalism you will take with you after completion of your Private Pilot Licence training at Schofields Flying Club. A world of enjoyment in private aviation will be available to you. Please call us for a personal discussion of your interests. We'll be pleased to chat.

Private Pilot Training Summary

Theory training is undertaken in parallel with Flight Training. At the conclusion of this programme the trainee qualifies for the award of a Certificate III - Aviation, a recognised academic credential.

There are two stages of training towards a Private Pilot Licence:
Basic training towards the General Flying Proficiency Test (GFPT)
Theory: Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK). 60 hours study, multiple-choice exam.
Flight: 25 hours dual, 5 hours solo (minimum)
Flight Test 2.5 hours

Extended training for the Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) (PPLA)
Theory: PPLA (Nav, Met etc). 60 hours study, multiple-choice exam.
Flight: 19 hours dual, 6 hours solo (minimum)
Flight Test: 2.5 hours
We specialise in meeting the training requirements of our students. The above training time is based on minimum hours and may not be representative of a student's required training time to attain the required standard. We can provide a tailored programme involving all ground tuition, CASA exams, pre-flight briefings, dual and solo flying time etc which meets the needs of the individual. Whilst any quotation will outline our fee structure based on CASA minimum requirements, the final cost in achieving the required level of proficiency may vary depending on the individual.

One of our Instructors can talk through a programme to suit your individual needs. Do not hesitate to call. We'll be pleased to make the time for you, and discuss cost estimates.

Preliminaries

Why not try a short trial instruction flight, with you at the controls? It's yours any time you like. Your instructor will show you many of the basics, and you can enjoy the view at the same time.
  • Pilot Evaluation Flight (your first lesson, about 40 minutes in a 4 seat Piper Warrior or in a 2 seat Cessna 150)
Let's do it! Getting a Student Pilot Licence is a bit like getting your L Plates. A few things need to be done first. Schofields Flying Club is good at helping its members with all this stuff.
  • Aviation Medical Check with Designated Aviation Medical Examiner
  • (SFC will provide you with a list of approved doctors)
  • apply for Student Pilot Licence (at CASA)
  • purchase Pilot Log Book*
  • apply for Schofields Flying Club Membership ($175 per year plus joining fee)*
  • Joining Fee of $55.00 applies to ALL new members
(From time to time the Club offers package deals to student pilots. Check with the Club for details)
  • purchase Visual Terminal Chart
  • purchase Headphones (at first, the Club will lend you some)
  • purchase textbook kit for ground training (you will work through this in a classroom environment most likely), and it will always serve as great reference material after you get your licence. SFC carries stock of these.
You are now ready for some fully fledged flying training!

Basic Training - GFPT
Top of Page
The Basic training programme will take you from your first lesson through to your first pilot's licence (GFPT). At this stage you could then take family and friends on short flights around the airfield and nearby training areas. This training is generally undertaken in 2 seat Cessna 150 or 152 aircraft, which are excellent trainers, and also the cheapest aircraft in the fleet. Some people prefer to start in the larger, slightly more expensive 4 seat Piper Warrior, as used in later phases of training. The choice is yours.
Phase 1 - Training to First Solo
FLYING TRAINING - Effects of controls, straight and level, climbing, descending, turning, stalling, circuits, circuit emergencies. Typically 10 hours dual instruction.
THEORY TRAINING - Training to pass 'PRE FIRST SOLO AERONAUTICAL KNOWLEDGE' examination. Either private study, TAFE or SFC ground school
FIRST SOLO FLIGHT - In circuit area. You'll never forget this one!
Phase II - Training to First Area Solo
FLYING TRAINING - Circuit solo consolidation, training area familiarisation, emergency landing procedures, advanced turning - 6 hours dual instruction & 4 hours solo flight
THEORY TRAINING - Training to pass 'PRE AREA SOLO AERONAUTICAL KNOWLEDGE' examination. Either private study, TAFE or SFC ground school
FIRST AREA SOLO - In training area, and you will find your own way home!
Phase III - Training to General Flying Proficiency Test
FLYING TRAINING - Advanced circuits, introductory instrument flying, bad visibility procedures, advanced emergency procedures. 9 hours dual instruction & 1 hour solo flight
THEORY TRAINING - Training to pass 'BASIC AERONAUTICAL KNOWLEDGE' examination. Either private study, TAFE College or SFC ground school
GFPT (Flight Test) 2 hours dual.
Your first Pilot's Licence! Gives passenger carrying privileges in circuit and training area.
Summary of Phases I - III (Ab Initio to GFPT)
Minimum 25 hours dual, 5 hours solo plus flight test.
PPL Training
Top of Page
Phase IV - Training to Private Pilot Licence

Now to put your new talents to some real use! Your next phase of training will take you into the wild blue yonder. You need at least nine cross-country flights to gain a full Private Pilot Licence. This will include training in controlled and uncontrolled airspace and airfield environments. You will also be taught many aspects of navigation, meteorology, pre-flight planning and general airmanship. In this phase you will upgrade to the 4 seat Piper Warrior or the more powerful Piper Archer, perhaps even the retractable undercarriage Piper Arrow. These aircraft are all excellent 4 place tourers.

FLYING TRAINING - Mix of short and longer flights. Check the weather, the best route, visual navigation, track keeping and radio procedures, fuel and load planning. It'll all fall into place!
THEORY TRAINING - Training to pass the CASA "PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE AEROPLANES" examination (PPLA). Either private study, TAFE or SFC ground school. Also study to pass Flight Radiotelephone Operator Licence Exam
PRIVATE PILOT FLIGHT TEST - 2.5 hours dual cross-country.
Summary of Phase IV (GFPT to PPL)
Minimum 19 hours dual, 6.0 hours solo plus Flight Test.
You now have your full Private Pilot Licence, and can travel anywhere in Australia by day in visual meteorological conditions. Congratulations!

What else can I do?
Top of Page
As a private pilot, you may choose to enjoy the pleasures of this licence without any further training (except refreshers of course). However, as you progress with your flying experience you might like to consider one or more of the various opportunities we provide for you to upgrade your capabilities. We offer a full range of upgrade options to help you grow your capabilities as far as you wish to take them. Night flying, instrument flying, aerobatics, multi-engine; we are happy to help whenever you want.

You might do one or two added items virtually straight away, or you may wait while your flying experience builds up. It all depends on what flying you want to do and how you wish to use your licence. The choices are always there for you.

Upgrades
Top of Page
As you will have learnt through your initial training and your subsequent flying experience, there is always more to learn in the aviation business! There are typically two types of process used in upgrading your qualifications. The first is a "logbook endorsement" where you will be taught something by your instructor (with ground briefing and air exercises) and once you are up to standard the instructor will put a stamp in your logbook to say so. The second is a "rating" where you go through a combination of more formal theory and flying training culminating in a flight test, much as you did for your early training.

Constant -Speed Propeller / Retractable Undercarriage Endorsement
Top of Page
These are really two separate design features found on most higher performance aircraft. The Piper Arrow is like a slightly more complex Archer with these features, and provides an excellent step-up in performance. The endorsement includes briefing and training in use of the constant speed unit and retractable undercarriage, endorsing you for the Piper Arrow. These feature endorsements are valid across aircraft types, but you will need a check-out on any new type you encounter. If you are buying your own retractable, we even can help you on that type. Allow 3.0 hours dual in a Piper Arrow.

Night VFR Rating
Top of Page
A very useful adjunct to the basic day VFR PPL. You may not deliberately set out in the dark (although the lights do look great), but with this rating you can legally and safely navigate to your destination after last light in visual meteorological conditions, giving you an extra margin of safety. You will also be entitled to navigate by radio aids. Why not try it at one of our "Night Circuit" evenings?
THEORY TRAINING - Self study of an easy to learn text. Introduction to instrument flight, radio navigation, some physiological effects and more on flight planning.
FLYING TRAINING - This training includes night circuits and 3 night cross-countries. Simulator training of 4 hours is used for the navaid work and instrument training, saving on the overall cost. Briefing on night circuits and night cross-countries is provided. Aircraft choice is yours, since all SFC aircraft are either NVFR or IFR equipped. Or bring your own!
NIGHT VFR FLIGHT TEST - 2.5 hours dual cross-country
Summary of Night VFR Training
Minimum 11 hours dual, 4 hours simulator, plus Flight Test.
Private Instrument Rating
Top of Page
A step up from Night VFR, although you can do one without the other. This rating is designed to allow you to safely fly as a private pilot in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) from point to point at or above the route lowest safe altitude. Various add-ons to the basic PIFR allow procedures such as GPS Arrival, NDB Approach, VOR Approach, GPS Approach, to get you lower than LSALT in accordance with published procedures. This rating offers you a lot of flexibility in your operations provided you are flying an appropriately equipped aircraft. It is also designed to allow the private pilot to maintain currency in procedures in a more flexible fashion than the full Command Instrument Rating, yet adhering to the same standards.

THEORY TRAINING: SFC run a ground course in two parts. The first focuses on the basic PIFR (enroute) and delves into radio navigation, meteorology, instrument flight planning and flight procedures. The second is devoted the individual Flight Procedure Authorisations (FPAs) for approaches to airfields in IMC. These do not have to be done if you don't need them.

FLYING TRAINING: This training includes radio navigation, instrument emergencies, instrument flight planning and radio procedures, various instrument departure and arrival procedures as well navaid holding patterns. We have IFR Piper Warriors and Piper Archer, but the Piper Arrows provide more advanced features which make IFR flight a little easier. Similarly for the Beechcraft Duchess if you would like the rating on a twin. Simulator training is used to reduce the costs of navaid training. Approach FPA's are done roughly 50:50 simulator : actual flight time. Got your own IFR aircraft? We'd be pleased to train you in that too.

BASIC PIFR FLIGHT TEST: 2.5 hours dual cross-country in simulated IMC.

PIFR FPA FLIGHT TEST: One or more flights of variable duration to demonstrate competency in (eg) instrument approach manoeuvres.

Summary of PIFR Training
Minimum 20 hours dual, including up to 10 hours simulator for en-route PIFR.
Approach FPA's additional, best done in a bundle, recommend at least 4 flights containing each of the desired FPA's to reach standard.
Command Instrument Rating
Top of Page
Now this is truly professional. The full CIR is required for commercial operations, but may also be held by a private pilot. This rating is done in an integrated fashion comprising instrument flight theory subjects and flight components, plus a comprehensive flight test. You can upgrade from a PIFR if you have one by sitting the Instrument Rating Exam (IREX), doing additional flight training if required, then doing the CIR flight test. Flight training is available in a combination of single and multi-engine aircraft, and theory training is available at the SFC ground school.

SFC has a full curriculum of training for this rating, including 20 hours on simulator and 25 hours flying training as a minimum.

Multi-Engine Endorsement
Top of Page
Moving from a single-engine aircraft to a twin introduces several further considerations into flight planning, flight management and general handling. To start with there is the complexity of having 2 of everything, then having to deal with it all at much higher speeds. It would be best if you had the constant speed propeller / retractable undercarriage endorsement prior to your twin training. A twin is very rewarding to master though - come and have a look. You can do the endorsement for VFR purposes only, use it as part of your IFR training, or upgrade from single to multi-engine IFR.

SFC has a curriculum of training of 7 hours dual for initial twin endorsement on the Beechcraft Duchess (BE76). Duchess conversions are available if you are endorsed on another twin.

Basic Aerobatics Endorsement
Top of Page
Aerobatics is the ultimate expression of freedom in flight. Whether it be gentle wing-overs and aileron rolls, more strenuous stall turns, loops and barrel rolls, here is some serious co-ordinated control movement to test your skills. We offer this endorsement in the Cessna 152 Aerobat which has excellent controllability and adequate performance for all manoeuvres and recoveries. Manoeuvres included in the basic endorsement are spinning, loop, wingover, stall turn, slow roll and barrel roll. More or less manoeuvres can be incorporated to your requirements, building up to more structured display sequences if you so desire.

Allow approx 10 hours dual and 3 hours solo to gain this endorsement.

Formation Endorsement
Top of Page
This is team sport with a difference. While flying close to other aircraft is normally strenuously avoided, this endorsement provides the discipline of position keeping during a variety of manoeuvres, initially following a lead and eventually (after lots of experience) enabling you to lead the formation yourself. Your flying will be crisp and accurate, and you will quickly learn the effects of precision control movements. This rating is normally conducted in the Piper Warrior aircraft, although the Cessna 150 is also available for the task at a slightly lower rate.

Allow approx 5 hours dual and 1 hour solo for initial formation approval. Great to do in a group.

KEEPING UP TO SPEED
Top of Page
General Refresher

Not flown for a while? Feeling a little rusty? Want to brush up on some aspects of your recent flying? A check ride is also the way to go if you are not current on type or not current on procedure (eg instrument approaches) or not current at all. Also, we can all benefit from an occasional round of advice or coaching from an instructor.

There is no need to wait for the Biennial Flight Review; you can (and should) feel free to do a check ride whenever you feel like it. This may be just circuits, perhaps in a crosswind, it may be a little bit of training area work, or it may be Sydney Control Zone Class C procedures. What about doing a Victor 1 sightseeing flight under supervision if you've not done it before.

Even without flying, you might like a bit of coaching in flight planning, met interpretation, Airservices NAIPS briefings and notifications or whatever. You'll feel much better for it!

Aeroplane Flight Review
Top of Page
We can structure an AFR for you to suit the flying you do and the ratings you hold. A basic VFR flight review should encompass some training area work and a short cross-country in the aircraft of your choice. If you hold a Night VFR rating we could time the review to include dusk and return after dark. If you hold a PIFR we can structure an AFR to encompass the various FPAs you hold.

The AFR is an excellent opportunity to hone your skills, and the instructor will ensure that the focus areas in the review are not only as required by the rules, but most importantly as being of greatest benefit to you. If you are not current, or maybe do not even have a current AFR, why not arrange a review with some coaching to bring you back up to speed. That's exactly what this is designed to do!

Instrument Procedure Currency
Top of Page
You can stay instrument current through your own practice with a safety pilot in VMC in accordance with CASA regulations, but a good way to really stay on top of it all is to arrange an instructor to accompany you in "mild" IMC weather for some real practice. Whether it is just to practice holding patterns or to shoot a range of approaches you hold, the real thing is the best adjunct to simulator practice to keep you right up to speed.

Overseas Pilots - Fly in Australia
Top of Page
Australia offers a magnificent aviation environment for overseas pilots and their passengers to enjoy. Whether this be for pilots visiting on holiday, those perhaps transferred to Australia on business, or those who have chosen to make Australia their home, the Australian aviation community will extend a warm welcome.

Pilots holding a licence issued under an overseas jurisdiction can obtain either a temporary 3-month permit to fly in Australia, or a full Australian licence. The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has some clearly defined processes to help you do this in the way most suited to your requirements. The permit generally involves a quick medical, a briefing on airspace organisation and flight procedures (very similar to ICAO standards), and some local flight familiarisation. The full licence will require a flight test. Allow approx 3 hours local flight familiarisation.

At the Club we are always pleased to welcome overseas pilots and help them get into the air in Australia. The Schofields Flying Club will be only too happy to help you with planning routes, destinations etc for your own "fly yourself" tour. You may even be able to plan your visit at a time to join in a Schofields flyaway to many places of interest.

We can arrange aircraft to suit your needs either from our own fleet or from others available to us on a cross-hire basis. We would be happy to talk with you directly or via email to help put things in place. In the meantime, CASA materials are available for you so you can be prepared in advance.

Partner "Pinch Hitter" Course
Top of Page
SFC offer a unique programme for "frequent passengers" to give them an added interest to the flying they do as well as providing a safety option for all aboard. This programme will teach a non-pilot to control the aircraft in the event the pilot becomes incapacitated, and bring that aircraft in to land under control. The trainee is shown the basics of aircraft and systems operation similar to that a pre-solo student would go through. This can be done with the trainee in the right hand seat, in the same situation as they could find themselves in the event of a real situation arising. No solo flying is involved. Trainees doing this programme gain a real sense of personal satisfaction and security with no pressure applied.

The programme generally covers about 5-10 hours of training as required.
