Pfizer Australia Pty Ltd - 30 May 07A team of nine executives from all corners of Australia met in Sydney during May 2007 for their quarterly update. The team, known as KAMs (Key Account Managers), were spending a week in Manly focusing on their Vision and Mission, building Team Strength, and developing competencies based on their "Wheel of Excellence". The Team Leader, Mark, proudly opened the conference, announcing the week's activities included a Team Challenge Day to be held on Wednesday, 30 May. ![]() Pfizer Australia Corporate Challenge - 30 May 2007 "The Challenge has a distinct aviation flavour and will be held at Bankstown Airport. I don't want to elaborate, but be prepared for an activity that will place you in an unfamiliar environment where you will lack competence". The team believed they would be asked to jump out of an aeroplane, and an element of anxiety flooded their confused minds. Nonetheless, team members soon became engrossed in their daily sessions, and that Wednesday was still three days away. Wednesday came and the KAMs arrived at Schofields Flying Club at Bankstown - all sober, having been warned by Mark on the previous evening to be alcohol responsible. "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen" bellowed Schoies General Manager, Nelson Crawshaw. "Welcome to Schofields Flying Club - welcome to our wonderful world of aviation - and welcome to your Team Challenge Day. In a few minutes you will be asked to Fly an Aeroplane!" Stunned silence, total disbelief, a little whimper from one of the team, then realization dawns... "We've been set up!" Gradually, sanity is restored as the team is introduced to instructors Janina and Tom. After a confident and reassuring pre-flight briefing and a lengthy debate on who will fly first, the KAMs are guided across the airfield by CFI Patrick Watson to the Australian Aviation Museum where they are welcomed by Museum Vice President Kevin Snowball. What is that whining, spluttering noise? Right on queue the DC3 commences it weekly run up. ![]() Instructors Janina and Tom Aviation enthusiast or not, an angry Dakota is a sure guarantee for spine-tingling attention. With the run up complete team members were ushered on board and took photos in the cockpit of this beautiful bird - sensational. By now our first two team members have arrived back from their flight of fancy, beaming and exhilarated, and asserting, "absolutely the best fun I've had in years". The others said, "If they can, I'm positive we can", and they did it remarkably well. Lunch was delivered by Club Treasurer, Peter Cunningham. The KAMs were literally flying high, all fears gone and were keen to feast. Back at the Club the team enjoyed a couple of drinks whilst awaiting award presentation. "Results time - the points have been tallied and the winner: ALL OF YOU!!" Congratulations, Pfizer Australia Key Account Managers. You were placed in an unfamiliar environment, you stepped up to the challenge, you overcame your angst, YOU SUCEEDED! |
