And what about a half-hour TIF in a Tiger Moth, Stearman or Nanchang? (Note: Unlike Scone and Tumut fly-ins this is not a Navex competition, so no questions to answer this time. Just Schoies members getting together to fly for fun!) The plan We are arranging for Club members to fly over to Orange for a BBQ lunch hosted by the Orange Aero Club and Thomas Aviation on Saturday 29 October.
Flights to Orange will be on a private hire basis, and you can cost share, as you know. If you would like to share with another pilot and fly one way, or if you have seats you would like to share, the club can help organise that. Student pilots might like to speak to their instructor about making the fly-in part of their navigation training. You are also welcome to participate as a passenger and contribute to the rental cost. Please contact the club and register your interest as a pilot or passenger as soon as possible. Pilots, let us know the aircraft you have booked or the reserved aircraft you wish to be allocated to. Also let us know if you’re looking for a share-pilot or don’t need passengers. Ring and have a chat about it if you like. We would like to firm up participation by Sunday 23 October, after which any unallocated reserved aircraft will be released for general use. See if you can Google the normal operating speeds for a Tiger Moth, Stearman or Nanchang and prepare for a fun day! More information? Contact David Jaffray (Organiser) (m) 0417 479 669 or Mike Allsop (Club VP and Director, Recreational Flying) (m) 0419 323 413 (e) mike.allsop@schofields-flying-club.com.au Tumut Navex – 28 August 2011 Below is the Initial Briefing for the Tumut Navex on Sunday 28 August. It includes the route, information about competition questions and the plan for the day. Two weeks out there are still plenty of aircraft available. Aircraft on the booking sheet for 28 August marked 'Tumut Fly In' are still available. Just call the Club to stake your claim. Members are welcome to register to fly one way and have the Club match them with a like-minded pilot. Or register as a passenger.
For registration and information about bookings and aircraft call the club on 9709 8488. For further information about the running of the day contact David Jaffray (M) 0417 479 669. Tumut Navex – 28 August 2011 – Initial briefing The Tumut Navex will be a visual navigation challenge, but the route does pass within 2 nm of Goulburn Aerodrome/NDB, not to mention right over the top of the Yass NDB. The Route Bankstown to Picton (PIC), Mittagong Aerodrome (YMIG), Wingecarribee Reservoir (S34°33', E150°29'), Marulan South (S34°46', E150°02'), Bungonia (S34°51, E149°57'), Gunning (GUNN), Yass township (ASST), Burrinjuck (BJK), Tumut (YTMU). Navex observation questions relate to the outbound trip only, so pilots and crews are free to plot their own courses back to Bankstown. There will be no questions before Picton to get us safely out of the Training Area nor within 10NM YTMU. The route skirts the spectacular Shoalhaven River canyons and tracks over the scenic Lake Burrinjuck providing some great viewing for passengers. The route keeps us clear of restricted airspace all the way, but note that between Gunning and Burrinjuck the lower limit of Class C Airspace associated with Canberra is 6500’. Competition Questions We will have three sets of questions for you and your crew to earn points through this exercise:
The event will be weather dependent. If forecast conditions look like being obviously unsuitable a day or so beforehand, we will pull the plug and advise you accordingly. If Tumut Aero Club cancel due forecast weather, we will advise also. Conditions on the day will be reviewed during our 0830 briefing, when crews can make their own decisions. In the event of cancellation, we will re-schedule the event for another day – I’m sure Tumut Aero Club would look after us if we asked. Tumut Navex - Sunday 28 August Members – feel like flying to Tumut for the Tumut Valley Fly-in on Sunday 28 August?
We are arranging for Club members to fly down to the popular Tumut Valley Fly-in for a BBQ lunch hosted by the Tumut Aero Club on Sunday 28 August. Expect to see a variety of flying machines and enjoy a mill and mooch, with fellow pilots from all over. As if the flying is not fun enough, we are planning to make it even livelier by making this a navigation exercise with a few questions to answer along the way – similar to the successful day to Scone earlier in the year. There will be a set of preflight questions to help with planning and a set of inflight questions to complete on the way. The in-flight questions will include easy (if you’re on track) observations of details on the ground and questions relating to airspace and navaid use. Take advantage of passenger observers to get through these. Route details will be given in advance to give you a chance to plan it all out, but it will not be too indirect. Flight time each way will be just over 90 minutes in a Warrior, less if you are in an Archer, Arrow or Diamond. We will hold a pre-departure briefing mid morning to give you a chance to get organised and underway, in good time for lunch at Tumut. Flights will be on a private hire basis, and you can cost share, as you know. If you would like to go with other pilots or if you have seats you would like to share, please let the Club know. Students could arrange it as a navex with an instructor, but you’d have to check availability well in advance. What next? Give the Club a call to register your interest, noting whether you would like to share with others or will have your own crew. Do this asap. Nominate an aircraft type preference, if you have one. Some aircraft have been reserved for this exercise and Nelson Crawshaw will allocate according to numbers, preferences, sharing etc. Others can be made available if required. Ring and have a chat about it if you like. We would like to firm up all participation by Friday 12 August. Get out your charts, Google Earth, whatever it takes to sharpen up your knowledge of the general direction we are heading. Prepare to have fun!
